Installing Roof Shingles: How We Do It

Installing roof shingles is a meticulous process that requires attention to detail and expertise. It involves carefully aligning and securing each shingle to create a watertight barrier that protects your home from the elements. From removing old shingles to preparing the surface and selecting the right materials, every step is crucial in ensuring a durable and visually appealing roof.

In roofing, it begins with the lines

The first step in installing a shingled roof is to put lines to trace the positioning of the shingle tops. The roofer positions these shingles above the lines for nailing. The lines are snapped throughout the roof from eave to peak. Tracing the lines can be finished with using shingle bottoms or tapes as advised by manufacturers. When all lay outing is done, the shingles are now ready for setup. It is very important to balance every other shingle by 6 inches to prevent from possible leakage when you overlap them and leave about 1/16 inch area in between each shingle.

Nailing them down

Start putting the first set of starter shingles and nail each using four galvanized roofing nails. Then, start laying each shingle on top of the starter shingles, suspending the drip edge by 1/2 inch. Don’t forget to nail each shingle from the bottom next to the previous one.

The roofer nails the shingle with a common nailing direction across each shingle. In setting up a shingled roofing, this will avoid the shingles from collapsing. Shingles cover the whole roof, and the next step is to position the hip shingles.

Hip shingles lay on top of the ridge shingles, which are utilized to cover the intersectional top or peak of the roof planes. Put one hip shingle each at both ends of the ridge and trace a line across one side. Then start putting more all the way approximately the center point of the ridge and nail them on each side.

The last step is the ridges

Using the ridge shingles is most likely the last step in setting up a shingled roofing. Unlike the hip shingles where the direction starts at both ends, laying the ridge shingles starts on one end all the way to the other end, thinking about the greatest wind direction. Finally the roofer attaches the last ridge shingle with two nails. The only nails that are exposed after all the roofing work is finally completed.
